• Mix: The Incredible Superstring Band – Funk de l’Automne

Here are some funky electro-tech party jams from many different eras I put together in the Fall of 2023. 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s all represented. I had a lot of fun with my Roland DJ 202 sequencing a bunch of possibilities while I put together my “crate,” but ultimately mixed it in Sonic Foundry Acid (yeap it still runs). Not a single mashup here, but there are a few very extended blends.

  • Mix: The Incredible Superstring Band – Gamut

For the second Incredible Superstring Band mix I wanted to continue on the weird trend I’d started with the first one. What better way to get there than opening up with Pantera? And Ministry?? And then flip the whole script at the halfway point by veering off into weird bubblegum techno/gabber/I don’t even know. There are some odd moments in this one. It weirds me out to listen to it now, so I suppose that’s “mission accomplished.”

  • Mix: The Incredible Superstring Band – Be The Change You Wish To See In The World

Here lies the very first ISB mix. Yes, this opens up with the Airwolf theme, doubled in syncopation. From there it just gets weirder. When I adopted the new alias I wanted it to be clear I was ready to do new things. This spirit led me to such strange choices as including the C&C Music Factory remix of New Kids On The Block’s hit “Step by Step.” Which is exactly as horrid as it sounds; I found this horridness delightful in the early summer of 2008 for whatever reason. This mix got a few raucous plays at the sorely-missed SCarey Studios space in West Baltimore that summer.

  • Mix: Drawers – From An Angle You’ve Never Seen Before

The final Drawers mix I ever made, this one has a theme that you can probably identify within a single listen. There’s a ton of mashups. A bunch of Klute (still my favorite DNB producer). But somehow none of that is involved in my favorite track, which is “The Volume” by Shy Child, a criminally under-appreciated group from the aughts who called it quits too soon. I will pump my fist for this track to this day.

  • Mix: DJ Chase The Devil – Wizards Have Landed

This mix, named after a Bill Hicks bit, is the most mashup-heavy mix I’ve ever made. For a few moments around the 7 minute mark there are four tracks playing simultaneously in this July 2007 release. Several other mashups make an appearance. Eventually I’ll put together a complete mashup discography release.

There are some fairly obscure references in these tunes. Super accurate recreations of the soundtrack from The Mysterious Cities of Gold make multiple appearances. I also used Timbaland’s ripoff of a demoscene track he made for Nelly Furtado while giving credit to the composer and SID translator (“Tempest and GRG with Nelly Furtado”).

Finally, where else have you heard The Four Seasons sound so dope?

  • Mix: Drawers – Sabbath Mode

This one is all over the place in the way that I often hope things will turn out. The cadence of Chris Rock’s bit in the intro seems to align with the rhythm of Cut Chemist’s beat. AFX blends into Killing Joke and then into Boards of Canada. The beautiful alternate version of the Pixies’ “Wave of Mutilation” eerily slips into classic era Autechre (the 1990s). Teebee-remixed Photek into Ceephax. Autechre returns within a mashup of a Chingy instrumental that itself borrows a line from Jaco Pastorius’ famous “Portrait of Tracy.” Throw Goblin and some strange Japanese drum n bass in the middle and this is what you get. 2006 was quite a year.

  • Mix: DJ Chase The Devil – The Only Winning Move Is Not To Play

After an introduction by everyone’s favorite integrative medicine guru, Dr. Andrew Weil, this mix starts out with a weirdly perfect pairing of Mike & Rich with Datassette. Somehow these two are perfectly in tune, and the effect is a strikingly smooth blend. This mix reminds me of the rainy days that frequently occurred as I mixed this during the spring of 2006. The title is a reference to one of my favorite movies: War Games. The final track is a reminder from Willie Nelson to think about the big picture whenever war is on the table.

  • Mix: Drawers – Aught Six Mix

Having decided to release under a new name, I thought one would be better than two, so Drawers became the alias for everything in the neighborhood of 170-ish DNB style, and DJ Chase The Devil would be the name for 130-ish electro style stuff. This is the first ‘Drawers’ mix I did, with much of it coming together during a trip with friends to West Virginia. I tend to wake up early in the morning, regardless of how late I was up the night before, and so during the trip when everyone else was still asleep I would slip on my headphones for several mornings and go to work on this. The title is a reference to my plan to have it ready for release by New Year’s Day 2006 and not anything to do with ammunition or firearms.

  • Mix: DJ Chase The Devil – Flex and Preen

At some point I decided to retire the Terrahertz moniker in favor of a fresh start. “DJ Chase The Devil” was one of the names I picked as a replacement, a reference to a classic Reggae tune sung by Max Romeo and backed by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s band The Upsetters. When I made and released this in 2005, the emo scene (which I was already too old for) had blown up, and the cover art was inspired by this meme-ish picture of a girl “dancing.” Musically, the mix is kind of all over the place, I think in a good way.

  • Mix: Terrahertz – Haole Nyahbinghi

The last mix I released under my Terrahertz alias, Haole Nyahbinghi came together so quickly that I still associate it with a particular time and place. In the summer of 2004 when I was putting this together, I lived across the street from a large antebellum cemetery in Baltimore. I would take breaks from this mix by walking around the cemetery, picking wineberries and pears that grew on the grounds. My ancient and poorly insulated second-floor apartment had a single window AC unit which would struggle during the heat of that summer, so the walks weren’t much hotter than staying inside, and the numerous mature trees throughout the cemetery provided effective shade. Listening back to this I can still recall the feeling of barely clinging to comfort in my bedroom studio, perched in front of my clunky laptop setup on an old primary school desk pushed against the wall. The blends into and out of Gift of Gab’s Flashback stand out for me.
